Airline mergers: Dj vu all over again? Business Traveler column: At the beginning of 1985 there were around 20 major airlines in the USA. Two years later half of them had disappearedthe victims of a wave of mergers that rocked the travel industry. Well-known brands like AirCal, Ozark, Piedmont, PSA, Republic, and Western Airlines disappeared almost overnight and other brands like American, Delta, and Northwest suddenly became much larger players. Now everyone’s wondering if it’s about to happen again.
Business travelers hit by triple whammy of rising costs. Business Traveler column: The travel industry is by most accounts on a strong trajectory, and airlines and hotels are reporting record occupancy. Sadly, the good news for the travel industry is bad news for the consumer, as a trifecta of forces will leave business travelers footing a large part of the bill.
10 reasons why airline woes aren’t over yet. Business Traveler column: After two consecutive quarters where most network airlines returned to profitability, many believe the airline industry crisis is over. And why not? Things look much rosier today. Oil prices have declined. Business is brisk. People are traveling again. So what’s wrong with this picture?.

Delta + US Airways: Who will pay? Business Traveler column: With the latest bid by America West/US Airways for bankrupt Delta Airlines, the bigger picture has finally come into focus and I now see that America West had a cunning strategy all along. America West/US Airways chief executive, Doug Parker is clearly on a bargain shopping spree, and I predict that business travelers will be forced to pick up the tab.
Getting a good airplane seat. Business Traveler column: When you can’t plead, cajole, or buy your way into an upgrade, getting a good seat in back is of tantamount importance. Here are some strategies you should try in order to ensure a smooth, comfortable flight.

Merging toward oblivion. Business Traveler column: Joe Brancatelli looks at the historical record for airline mergers, and finds that after three decades of consolidation, so-called legacy carriers have only succeeded in losing market share.
All-business-class all the time. Life on the road may be more of the same-old same-old in the middle of the pack, but business travelers are suddenly living large on the busiest transatlantic routes and some of the most peculiar ones. Joe Brancatelli looks at the new crop of all-business- class airlines.
Business travel is tough, but being there can’t be beat. The mechanics of life on the road, as we can all attest, aren’t much to E-mail home about these days. The flights stink. The hotels get old. The food is forgettable. The schedules are awful. The security is annoying. But the one thing that makes business travel worth it is the opportunity to be somewhere in the world when something interesting is happening there.
The “Borat” B&B owners tell all. First came the question: Was that a real BB comedian Sacha Baron Cohenfled in the hit movie, thinking the Jewish owners had transformed themselves into cockroaches and were menacing him? The answer is yes, it’s..
Data on Delta tell a troubling tale. In the almost 14 months since Delta Air Lines declared bankruptcy, it has been on a desperate, breakneck drive to remake itself. It has canned Song; slashed its domestic route network; embarked on a massive international expansion; and, lately, declared itself on the way to recovery. What Delta won’t tell you, however, is that it is currently the least-reliable, most-delayed, most-likely-to-lose-your-luggage carrier in the nation.
