Airline mergers: Dj vu all over again? Business Traveler column: At the beginning of 1985 there were around 20 major airlines in the USA. Two years later half of them had disappearedthe victims of a wave of mergers that rocked the travel industry. Well-known brands like AirCal, Ozark, Piedmont, PSA, Republic, and Western Airlines disappeared almost overnight and other brands like American, Delta, and Northwest suddenly became much larger players. Now everyone’s wondering if it’s about to happen again.
